The Iraqi Parliament's August Holiday

Much has been made of the Council of Representatives's decision to adjourn for the month of August -- making noises that this was quite a concession because originally they were going to take July off as well, plus they had moved to a six-day-a-week work schedule where it previously had been three. This, to say the least is problematic, and -- even if it's less important that the national legislature be in session than that discussions continue informally within and among different factions -- does not play well in Peoria.

Of course, if the insurgents worked three days a week and took the summer off, it would be a different ballgame. What's going on here makes World War I's Christmas Truce seem like it happened on another planet -- which it effectively did.

If I were Muslim I would be damned pissed off at these guys desecrating mosques (forget sectarian stuff, I mean using their own as ammo dumps, etc.), ratcheting up attacks during Ramadan, etc. It seems they're of the "destroy the village to save it" mentality.
